UW Environmental Isotopes Lab
SERVICES

The Environmental Isotope Laboratory was initially conceived as a research facility, but presently provides fee-for-analysis services to national and international organizations including universities, government agencies and environmental consultants with links to industry . EIL responsive turnaround times, procedural integrity, accountability and quality have earned a loyal clientele worldwide.

uwEILAB is one of the largest isotope labs in the world with eleven isotope mass spectrometers, seven liquid scintillation counters and preparation lines for stable and radioactive isotope analyses. Recent major developments include the acquisition of systems to analyze carbon, nitrogen and sulphur stable isotope ratios in micro quantities of organic compounds present in lake sediments, pools, aquatic organisms, etc. The systems are heavily used by biologists working on food chain studies. New research possibilities in the field of organic contaminants in groundwater have been opened with the acquisition of three on-line GC-C-IRMS units that perform isotope analyses of carbon and hydrogen on individual organic compounds separated out of mixtures.

The Environmental Isotope Laboratory carries out isotopic analyses of the following types of samples:
